Requirements to obtain a marriage license in Rhode Island
- Individuals must be 18 or older to obtain a marriage license.
- Brides must be at least 16 years old with parental consent.
- No medical exam, blood test or waiting period is required.
- A certified birth certificate, drivers license and social security card are required.
- If divorced within the last 12 months, the final divorce decree and picture proof of ID must be presented.
- The license must be obtained in the town of the bride’s residence if both are Rhode Island residents; in the groom's if only the groom resides in Rhode Island.
- Non-residents must obtain a license in the town in which they will be married.
- Both bride and groom must be present at the Town Clerks office.
- Check the hours of the Town Clerks office, they vary. Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days.
- License cost is $27.00. The state takes at least 30-40 days to mail you your certified marriage license,
- Also, ask the Clerk how you might obtain a certified copy from the town that the license will be filed in.
- Request the mail-in form when obtaining your license, or come in person.
- A $15 fee covers the certified copy from the clerk.
